Founded in 1935 by pianist William James Basie (1904-1984), help the Count Basie Orchestra has released hundreds of recordings, discount won every respected jazz poll in the world at least once, appeared in movies, television shows and commercials, performed at presidential inaugurals, and has won 18 Grammy Awards, the most ever by a jazz orchestra. The 17-member ensemble was hailed this year for its “legendary music that has already survived the test of time.” The October concert — celebrating the group’s 80th anniversary year and led by dynamic trumpeter Scotty Barnhart — marks the ensemble’s OCU debut.
